houston – The American Psychological Association said more than 1 in 5 people believe their work environment is harmful to their mental health.
Mental Health America of Greater Houston (MHA Houston) recently won the Bell Seal, which recognizes mentally healthy workplaces, an award that all businesses can qualify for and strive for.
According to MHA of Greater Houston President Renae Vania Tomczak, creating an emotionally safe space starts with modeling self-care.
“This shows your employees an understanding of the values you hold dear and just being human,” Tomczak said.
Here are some of the benefits that will help you achieve that.
-
paid holiday
-
Relaxation space in the office (consider using a closet as a relaxation room or installing an aroma station)
-
Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) can also provide free medical treatment and other benefits.
“We’re a small organization. We’re a nonprofit, right? This is a fairly low-cost way to do it. And again, this is a way to tell your employees that you really care about their mental health. It shows you care,” Tomczak said. “You have to ask them questions. When you do your annual survey every year, make sure you include some questions about mental health, and then take that idea and information and develop support around that. Investment. The rate of return is invaluable.”
MHA provides mental health resources and can also advise organizations and businesses on how to provide a mentally healthy working environment. Please email us at [email protected].
