Lily Allen sparked a backlash after revealing she sat in first class and her daughter in economy class on a flight to London.
The singer made the confession while speaking to childhood friend Mikita Oliver on the BBC’s podcast miss me?
Mr Allen told his co-hosts that when he returned to London with his 11-year-old daughter Ethel for a friend’s birthday, he decided to sit apart from her.
“We’re flying to London today to see you for your birthday. I’m flying first class and she’s flying economy,” she said.
“Do you know what that is?” Allen joked, and Oliver said, “Selfish?”
Oliver continued: Since you’re living in New York for my 40th birthday, and that baby is coming to London now, we’ll have that birthday at the end of the road we grew up on. ”
“Right now, there’s a trend on social media where people are defiantly saying they won’t give up their seat to a child on a plane,” Allen said, and a friend agreed: “That makes sense.” Why pay money to give up your seat? It’s different from a train. ”
But Allen went on to argue that plane passengers should be aware of family members who are not sitting next to them.
“For large groups, airlines often separate seats,” she explained.
“When you get to the airport, they’ll tell you there’s a child sitting there.” [away from you] So when you get on a plane, you have to ask people if you can sit next to your child. ”
“Obviously it’s an inconvenience for everyone involved, but when you say, ‘My mom came to me and asked me to move, and I told her not to,’ that’s what gives it an impact on social media. I think that’s interesting.” ‘Is this what we’ve become? Good job, you managed to get the family to sit apart. ”
Ms Allen argued that some families may not have had the opportunity to reserve seats in advance and shared her wish that people would be a little more kind to others.
“This is what I say, trying to get myself into first class while my child is alone in the back seat of a plane: I don’t want to sit with my child,” the singer laughed.
Her remarks divided social media, with some slamming the star for seeming to contradict herself.
Some said, “That’s fine,” while others said, “It’s pathetic to leave your job to the flight attendants!”
However, others supported the singer, claiming that her refusal to take her children to first class helped to “ground” them.
