Follow your dreams and be a weirdo. Important advice from the latest Tomorrow Makers podcast produced by Pennsylvania Institute of Technology.
In “Get Weird,” we meet design guru Nick Stephenson, a graphic design instructor, and Ali Petrizzi, a 2020 graphic design graduate and senior UX designer at Microsoft.
The dynamic duo discuss the diverse paths and freelance opportunities available in the graphic design field. Topics covered include AI, data, bad design, good design, and chasing your dreams.
Penn College faculty say students don’t have to be great artists to consider graphic design as a major or career. All they need to do is appreciate good design, want to say something to the world, and be willing to embrace their weird ways.
“One of my favorite graphic designers says that what felt weird to you as a kid is what makes you great as an adult,” says Nick. “We think about things differently and we can find ways to take the message and make it really interesting visuals that make people go, ‘Wow! What a cool idea!’ I think sometimes forcing us to imagine the world and see it differently can translate well into creating really interesting designs.”
Ali’s advice? “Be playful, have fun, be curious, and be persistent.”
