YouTube is pulling back a redesign it was testing on its website. Over the past few days, several users have noticed a new layout while playing videos. There was so much negative reaction to this that the company acted accordingly.
The rollout of the new UI was not a large scale one as it was a test to see how the public reacted to the changes. After seeing the negative reaction, YouTube brought it back and now the old design is showing up again for those who got the new design. Multiple users on platforms such as Reddit confirmed this.
YouTube has undergone some design changes in recent years. However, the video playback UI remains largely the same. Previously, it consisted of the currently playing video, the description and comments below it, and recommended videos on the right. However, the latest redesign the company tested made some fundamental changes to this.

In the new UI, the playing video maintained the same placement. However, descriptions and comments now appear on the right, and recommended videos appear below. The new UI had its pros and cons. First, it fundamentally broke his UI that users have been accustomed to for many years. UI has always tended to be divisive. Also, the recommended videos below the currently playing video are now larger than when they were on the right.
Compared to the classic UI, there are fewer recommendations at a glance (only 3). You have to scroll to see other videos and lose track of the video that is playing. But the new layout did some good. The comments on the right allow you to scroll while the video remains visible. This is useful for users who want to read other people’s posts in the comment box. In the classic UI, you have to scroll down to see everything and remove the video you were watching from the screen.
The new UI appears to be heavily inspired by the redesign that the YouTube app for Android TV underwent in March. Perhaps the ideal future new UI would be to incorporate the best of both worlds. This means you don’t lose track of the video that’s playing and make comments scrollable without changing the placement of video recommendations or descriptions.
