BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Friday morning, members of the Bay County and Panama City Beach Chambers of Commerce met for First Friday to discuss tourism.
The tourism industry brings in approximately $3.1 billion in revenue to Bay County each year.
Various events are held every month as part of Tourism Appreciation Month.
“This is a great way to give back to all of the hardworking people in the tourism industry,” said President and CEO of the Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce. “They work hard all year round and truly support our… They take care of the tourists who visit the area.” Christopher MacLean said. “So this is just a way to celebrate them and celebrate all the visitors that come to our destination.”
Bay County Tourism Development Council Executive Director Dan Lowe released the revenue numbers Friday.
Records show total nightly revenue was down about $2 million in March compared to last year. However, they are working to close the gap and still expect to meet their revenue targets.
Officials said they expect large numbers of visitors during the first weekend in June, when the Gulf Coast Jam is held.
“People are concerned about inflation, gas prices and their personal lives, so demand is trending down,” Lowe said. “We have to do everything we can to find people who are going to travel this summer and inspire them to make sure they come here.”
“We want people to come here all year round. The signature events held during the shoulder seasons really help, and the attractions, restaurants, everything our destination has to offer, the beautiful beaches You can’t beat it. St. Andrews State Park, Pier Park, there’s so much to do here in Bay County.”
On First Friday, 2023-2024 Leadership Bay County announced new initiatives to support local residents and visitors.
They created a program called Real Fun Deals that works with local businesses to offer discounts on days when double red flags are flying.
