electric car manufacturers Rivian Automotive Co., Ltd. (NASDAQ:RIVN) announced a new charger design that will open up its Rivian Adventure Network (RAN) to a broader range of EVs later this year.
Expanding accessibility: Rivian announced in a press release that it plans to give all compatible EVs access to the RAN through a new charger design. These chargers are compatible with both 400-volt and 800-volt battery packs, utilize CCS connectors, and offer support for the North American Charging Standard (NACS) to accommodate a wider range of vehicles. .

Vehicles using Tesla’s NACS chargers will initially require an approved adapter, but Rivian plans to introduce native NACS charging support through a future hardware update.
Infrastructure expansion efforts: “Rivian exists to address two specific needs: electrifying transportation systems and supporting the transition of the electric grid to carbon-free energy sources.” Paul FreyVice President of Battery, Charging and Adventure Products at Rivian.
All new RAN stations will be built with next-generation chargers and existing sites will be retrofitted with new hardware. Additionally, the company prioritizes installing pull-through charging stations in new locations wherever possible to ensure convenient access for vehicles towing trailers.
Why it’s important: The latest hardware design will enable Rivian to leverage funding from the U.S. National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, as well as additional state and utility programs focused on supporting the growth of EV charging infrastructure.
This development comes after Rivian previously advised drivers not to use third-party adapters with Tesla Superchargers. Rivian vehicles utilize a Combined Charging System (CCS) port and require an adapter to ensure compatibility with Tesla’s Supercharger network, which uses NACS. In March 2024, news surfaced suggesting that Rivian vehicles had achieved compatibility with Tesla’s Supercharger.
