Fort Lauderdale, Florida, May 8, 2024–(BUSINESS WIRE)–A new Manhattan Prep/Kaplan survey of more than 300 prospective MBA students reveals varying attitudes toward GenAI and its use in admissions. *Of those surveyed, 56% think AI should be allowed to be used as a tool to help write admissions essays, but only with certain guidelines and restrictions. 20% think it should not be allowed under any circumstances. 18% said usage should be unlimited. The remaining 7% she was unsure about. A separate Manhattan Prep/Kaplan survey of business school admissions officers found that only a handful of business schools have policies in place that instruct students on how they can use AI in their admissions essays. , indicating that this issue is still not resolved. **
Other findings from the survey of MBA students include:
-
There is concern among those surveyed that allowing applicants to use GenAI in their admissions essays will give them an unearned advantage. Exactly half said it unfairly levels the playing field for applicants who don’t have strong writing skills. 32% don’t believe that’s true. The remaining 18% are not sure.
-
Of those surveyed, 60% said they would be more likely to use AI in their admissions essay if the school they applied to allowed it. 24% said they were unlikely to use it. 16% said they did not know.
-
But once an applicant proves their mettle, the voting audience sees things a little differently. Two out of three (67%) say business schools should allow enrolled students to use GenAI as part of their coursework/academic experience, with certain guidelines and restrictions. 20% think registered students should be able to use her GenAI without any restrictions at all. 8% said it should not be allowed under any circumstances. The remaining 6% she was unsure about.
-
When asked how often they use AI in their work and personal lives, 8% said “always.” 25% answered “often”. 38% answered “sometimes.” 19% answered “rarely”. And 10 percent said “not at all.”
“Students pursuing an MBA have to take the GMAT exam without using GenAI. Also, given the newness of the technology, they have also accumulated a GPA without using GenAI. It’s no surprise that people think GenAI is necessary for business schools.” At the same time, our results show that many people would like to use GenAI to their advantage if allowed. ,” said Stacey Coprins, director of content and curriculum at Manhattan Prep. Kaplan. “Results from Manhattan Prep and Kaplan’s latest business school admissions officer survey show that most MBA programs have no policy at all that allows applicants to use GenAI in their admissions essays; “We do not believe that this is a sustainable position,” as we increasingly receive questions from prospective students who want to know the boundaries of acceptable use. Our prediction is that many business schools will develop GenAI policies next year. ”
