Ma Yansong/MAD Architects has unveiled the design for Cloud 9 Sports Center, a 6,000 square meter athletic complex located in Shijiazhuang, China. The venue is proposed to be the heart of the CBD’s Central Park, a public space surrounded by residential, commercial and recreational facilities. The center has been designed to present a soft and smooth exterior to blend in with its surrounding environment, reflecting the beautiful park while featuring a variety of facilities including a gym, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, and commercial space. Masu. Construction of the new sports center will begin in March this year and is expected to be completed in 2025.
According to the architects, the center’s design aims to enhance both programmatic functionality and environmental sustainability. A cooling tower is integrated in a strategic position on his second floor, optimizing air circulation and freeing up space on the first floor. Additionally, a green ramp and second-floor platform will be incorporated to act as a buffer between the sports center and the city, and an integrated running track will connect the venue with parks, outdoor courts, terrace plazas and observation decks.
The building envelope uses an ETFE membrane with a metallic coating, creating a unique image for the structure. The membrane softly reflects the surrounding landscape and helps minimize the effects of building volumes and cooling tower obstructions. The membrane also allows park visitors to peek into the center’s activities, turning it into an exhibition of city life.
