LOMPOC, Calif. – Hundreds of seniors received valuable information about important community resources Friday morning at the annual health fair in Lompoc.
For three hours starting at 9 a.m., an estimated 500 seniors attended the popular, free event at the Dick DeWeese Community and Senior Center.
The expo was specifically aimed at area residents ages 50 and older and featured dozens of vendors including health care providers, government agencies, local businesses, organizations, and other senior-related groups.
Thanks to the generosity of Lompoc Valley Medical Center, seniors were also able to undergo medical examinations, including blood tests and blood pressure measurements.
“A lot of them don’t even know what it takes until they get here,” said Sue Slavens, supervisor of Lompoc Recreation, which has hosted the event for years. “They meet with different vendors and say, oh, wow, I didn’t know that was offered here in Santa Barbara County. So they can find it. A lot of seniors are homebound. Because I don’t get to go out much, I also get to talk about the exercise program, which I do twice a week with 80 men and women. ”
The health fair was organized by the Lompoc Parks and Recreation Department and the Lompoc Hospital District Foundation.
