Former University of Albany defensive lineman and 2024 NFL Draft prospect Amitral “AJ” Simon has died at the age of 25, the school announced Wednesday.
The cause of death has not been announced.
“The University at Albany football program was deeply saddened to learn this morning of the passing of former student-athlete Amitral “AJ” Simon,” the University at Albany said in a statement. “AJ was a great young man and an even better teammate throughout his time at Albany. He was a role model on and off the field and served as a pillar of this program for the past two years. His death will be greatly missed.”
“It was a pleasure coaching and becoming friends with AJ Simon for two years,” said Albany head coach. Posted by Greg Gattuso on X. “My prayers go out to the Simon family. I love you and you will always have a special place in my heart.”
Simon played two seasons at Albany and declared for the 2024 NFL Draft in December. He was ranked as the No. 448 prospect by ESPN after a season in which he earned first-team All-CAA honors. He recorded 55 tackles and 12.5 sacks in 15 games, helping the Great Danes go 11-4 and win his first conference title.
According to NBC, Simon visited the New England Patriots last week before the draft.
Off the field, Simon was awarded the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Achievement List. This roster requires students to maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average.
