Brunch is a great way to spend time with mom, but if you want to do something a little different, consider these events that give you a taste of New Orleans culture.
Quarter tour: To learn all about the Crescent City’s history, try the nonprofit Save Our Cemeteries tour, “Saints, Brave, and Wicked Women of the French Quarter.” This tour focuses on the women who shaped Vieux Carré from the early 1700s to today.
Talk about diversity. Learn about the free women entrepreneurs and women of color who saved the French Quarter from destruction. Then there’s Marie Laveau, the queen of Voodoo, and the Venerable Henriette de Lille, who may be the first African-American saint. It’s also home to the infamous Madame LaLaurie haunted house and the former home of America’s first Princess of Monaco.
It’s a lot to understand, but it’s sure to be fun.

Mother’s Day Concert & Picnic: The old favorite event is in its 25th year. Free Mother’s Day Concert & Picnic hosted by Vieux Carre property owners, residents, and stakeholders. The New Leviathan Oriental Foxtrot Orchestra is once again playing songs perfect for the whole family. Bring your own food, drinks, and dancing shoes on May 12th from 4pm to 7pm. Home tour: If home style and interior décor is your mom’s passion, spend an afternoon with her in the Old Mandeville Historic District and browse six homes ranging in style from Creole to mid-century modern.
The Old Mandeville Historical Society will host tours on May 12 from 2 to 5 p.m. Depart from the Lang House at 605 Carroll Street and pick up your wristband, map, or same-day ticket. Purchase online at oldmandevillehistoryassociation.org.
Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for students (ages 12-18). Day-of-tour tickets (cash or check only) are $30 for adults and $15 for students. Note: Some homes are not handicapped accessible.
Early start concert: The Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra will celebrate Mother’s Day one day early on Saturday, May 11, at St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church, 7100 St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans. This concert, her fifth in this year’s series, will let moms know about tomorrow’s local stars.
The performance includes a French horn performance by Symphony-Level Concerto Competition winner Zoe Heim, as well as pieces by all orchestras, including the North Shore Sinfonia, South Shore Sinfonia, North Shore South Shore Philharmonia, and Symphony Orchestra. It will be done.
