Student cadets who complete Utah Tech’s Reserve Officer Training Program can graduate as commissioned officers in the United States Army or the Utah National Guard. The program allows students to major in a subject of their choice and minor in military science.
“This is a great opportunity for the Utah National Guard to partner with UT and Army Cadet Command to relaunch our ROTC program,” Lt. Col. Toby Adamson, Utah Army National Guard recruiting and retention battalion commander, said in a news release. “We believe that by providing a high-quality, active education, UT will produce excellent officers and leaders.
“This is an important partnership between the U.S. Army, the Utah National Guard and Utah Tech. It’s great to be back at Utah Tech and be part of the great program they’ve developed.”
Steven Lee, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Utah Tech, agreed, calling it an “important regional partnership with the U.S. Army and the Utah National Guard.”
“I can’t think of a better embodiment of UT’s ‘Active Learning, Active Life’ mission than ROTC,” Lee added. “Our students receive excellent training and important career opportunities.”
Students who enroll in an ROTC program may be eligible for generous scholarships that help with tuition, room and board.
“The university’s Reserve Officer Training Program expands scholarship opportunities for qualified students and provides a direct path to serving as an officer in the U.S. Army,” said Col. Travis Bailey, professor of military science for Army Reserve Officer Training Battalion, 1st Battalion.
Utah Tech’s ROTC program will be administered by a new Department of Military Science, which will initially be staffed by the Utah National Guard and will include a curriculum developed by the Army, according to a news release. The Department of Military Science will be housed in Utah Tech’s McDonald Center and will be part of the university’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
