SHELBY — Third Street Family Health Services plans to expand renovations at its Shelby Center following a recent allocation from Ohio’s capital budget.
State Sen. Mark Romanchuk (R-Ontario) announced on June 17 that he will provide nearly $5 million in state capital budget funding for projects throughout the 22nd Senate District, including $350,000 for the Shelby Health and Wellness Centre.
The Shelby Center on Third Street, located at 31 E. Main St., is currently undergoing renovations to expand services to include obstetrics and gynecology, behavioral health and existing medical and dental areas.
Alex Goff, development director for Third Street Family Health Services, said the recent funding grant created an opportunity to expand the center’s renovations.
“There are some things that were slated for phase two and we’re looking to move some of those forward,” he said.
Third Street plans to make improvements to the front facade and roof of the building on East Main Street.
Goff said Third Street hopes to reopen the Shelby Center sometime in early fall of this year.
“This will allow us to keep the hospital open and not have to close again or interrupt patient care for phase two, so it’s a blessing in that respect,” he said.
Renovation including central waiting area
previous Richland Sauce The Shelby Center on Third Street has seen a more than 100% increase in total patient volume over the past five years, according to the report.
Goff said Shelby’s patient retention rate has been “exceptional,” including those who have to travel to facilities on Third Street in Mansfield and Busyrus.
“We’re pleased to make this access point a little easier for the people of Shelby,” he said.
The Shelby Health and Wellness Center renovation will also include a central waiting area, development leaders said.
Goff said previously there were separate waiting rooms for medical and dental services.
“Right now, the nice thing about this facility is that it will have a central waiting room where dental and medical appointments can be done. We are also looking at adding additional services in the future, such as behavioral health and obstetrics and gynecology,” Goff said.
“We expect this renovation will enhance our holistic approach to care for our patients and allow them to receive more services that were not available prior to the renovation.”
Third Street is “excited” about downtown Shelby’s revival.
Third Street serves Richland, Ashland, Crawford and Marion counties. Community Counseling and Wellness Center Mental health services expand in Bucyrus and Marion.
Goff said Third Street is excited that the renovation of downtown Shelby will be part of the city’s recent “rebirth.”
“Being able to renovate (the building at 31 E. Main St.) and contribute to the revitalization of downtown and make it a more comfortable and accessible space for Shelby residents … I’m really excited to be able to contribute on that front,” he said.
Updates on the Shelby Health and Wellness Center renovations will be posted regularly on Third Street’s Facebook page.
