Over the Fourth of July weekend, the Michigan Department of Transportation will lift lane restrictions on 60 percent of its road and bridge projects to ease traffic congestion caused by an expected record number of holiday travelers.
Starting at 3 a.m. today through 6 a.m. Monday, lane restrictions will be lifted at 105 of the 174 projects across the state, however drivers are advised that equipment and certain traffic configurations will remain in place, including temporary shifts and shoulder closures.
In Kingsford, traffic will be switched to open one lane in each direction at the intersection of Carpenter and Woodward Avenues. Traffic will also be switched at Lake Shore Drive on US 41/M-28 in Ishpeming. Detours will be posted on side streets.

AAA expects more than 2.6 million Michigan residents to travel more than 50 miles from home over the holiday, a record high for the second consecutive year, and about 1.4 million Wisconsinites are expected to hit the roads over the holiday, also a record high, AAA said.
In Brown County, Wisconsin, Highway 172 is closed between Highway 54 in the village of Hobart and the Green Bay-Austin Straubel International Airport. Traffic is detouring on Highway 54 and I-41.
In Oneida County, Wisconsin, US 8 near Rhinelander is closed from Hwy 17 North to Oneida County P. Traffic will be detoured around Oneida County P and Hwy 17.
“Please fasten your seat belt, don’t drink and drive, and be courteous to other drivers.” Wisconsin Department of Transportation Secretary Craig Thompson said in a news release. “These simple steps can help save lives and prevent accidents.” He said.
