About 30 minutes before the ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday, June 30, the 28-year-old singer revealed on social media that a “really horrible accident” had forced her to step down.
“I am so frustrated and disappointed that no one believes in me,” Normani wrote on her Instagram Story, along with a photo of herself leaning on crutches with one bandaged knee. “I had a terrible accident while rehearsing for BET and am injured. I normally can handle anything but unfortunately, per doctor’s orders, I will not be able to perform this show.”
The former Fifth Harmony member wrote that performing on stage against her wishes had delayed her “recovery,” and that she was “devastated” by the ultimate decision and “let down” her fans.
She also thanked the BET Awards for the opportunity to take the stage: “Sending love to BET for giving me and all the other beautiful black women this opportunity,” she wrote in the post.
The “1:59” singer, who was being promoted by the BET Awards in the run-up to the ceremony, has released his debut solo album. DopamineJune 14th.
Following Fifth Harmony’s hiatus in 2017, Normani released several singles, including “Motivation” and “Wild Side.” Cardi B and “Waves” — but her debut album struggled to come to fruition.
