Local 4 will be taking you on the road before the busiest travel day of the year begins, the Fourth of July.
Wednesday, July 3 and Sunday, July 7, 2024, are the busiest travel days as millions of Michiganders prepare to travel. If you’re planning on heading out, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is offering help.
AAA estimates that about 3 million Michiganders will be traveling over the holidays, so the good news is that you won’t see as many orange cones on Wednesday.
People across the country are getting ready for their holiday trips, like Bob Fiennes, who bought fireworks on Tuesday and was ready to leave on Wednesday morning.
“We’re going to Indiana,” Fiennes says, “and we always try to leave around 2 a.m. so we can beat the traffic.”
Fiennes isn’t the only one heading out of state, with Wednesday expected to be the busiest travel day of the week, both on the roads and in the air.
“It’s going to be busy outside,” said AAA spokesman Alec Slacki. “Be prepared for delays wherever you are.”
“As an agency across the country, we expect that to happen this summer,” TSA Federal Security Administrator Christopher Murgia said.
Traffic is expected to be very heavy on July 7 as Michiganders return home for the holidays. Governor Whitmer has therefore removed orange barrels from approximately 60% of roads to improve road traffic.
That could be helpful to Mike Schuchman, who is wondering whether to take the 10-hour trip to New York with his two daughters.
“My in-laws are in New York, so the question is, ‘How much do I want to see them?'” Schukman says. “And that leads to, ‘How do I annoy them?’ It would be great if they could get fined in New York City. My daughters want to see the fireworks in the city, and New York is a great place to celebrate the Fourth of July, so we’ll bring these if we can.”
As more people have the flexibility to work remotely, we can expect to see more people leaving the office earlier in the week. Remember to allow yourself time and stay safe.
