AAA predicts that Independence Day travel will set new records both nationally and in Florida as it wraps up this weekend. More than 70.9 million people across the U.S. are expected to travel more than 50 miles from home, with about 4.5 million of those people being Floridians.
“The summer travel season is off to a strong start and we expect new travel records to be set during Independence Day week, both on the road and in the air,” said Debbie Haas, vice president of travel for AAA. “We expect 3.5 million more travelers than last year, which means even more people at popular destinations like airports, beaches, lakes and theme parks.”
AAA’s Independence Day Travel Forecast measures domestic travel of 50 miles or more over a nine-day period, from Saturday, June 29th through Sunday, July 7th.
Road Trip
AAA predicts that a record 60.6 million people will travel by car during the week of Independence Day, 2.8 million more travelers than last year. This year’s numbers will also surpass 2019, when 55.3 million people traveled by car the week of July 4.
Meanwhile, Florida road travel is on track to hit a new record for the second straight year, with more than 3.9 million Floridians expected to take the road, 183,000 more than last year.
“Drivers should prepare for heavy afternoon and evening traffic congestion, especially in major metropolitan areas, near theme parks and popular tourist attractions,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA (Auto Club Group). “There will be a lot of people on the road, so it’s important to be patient, minimize distractions while driving and yield to people on the side of the road.”
Sunday is expected to be the busiest day for road traffic.
Air travel
Domestic air travel is also expected to set a record: AAA predicts that 5.74 million people will fly to Fourth of July destinations nationwide, up about 7% from last year and 12% from 2019.
According to AAA booking data, domestic airfares are 2% cheaper during Independence Day week compared to last year, with the average price for a round-trip domestic ticket being $800. Airports will be busy throughout the week. AAA recommends arriving two hours early, reserving parking in advance and traveling with carry-on luggage instead of checked bags to save time and money.
Other Transportation Options
More than 4.6 million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises and trains. This category is up 9% compared to last year, but this year’s figure falls short of 2019’s 4.79 million.
“Cruises continue to experience significant growth,” says Haas. “Demand for Alaska cruises is high this time of year, with Seattle and Anchorage being the most popular destinations in the country. Cruise travelers are also finding great deals this summer. With so many new ships on the market and rising prices, working with a travel advisor is a great way to ensure you get the best value on your vacation. A travel advisor can also help you select travel insurance that will protect you and your investment from the impact of unexpected events before and during your trip.”
