GLA’s Chia Tai Qingdao Production and Research and Development Headquarters
GLA-designed Shanghai Pharmaceutical Jiatai Youthful Bao Production and Research Development Headquarters Deqing Moganshan Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone. The first phase, which is already operational, consists of a production park, while the second phase will include new production plants for oral liquids and injectables, as well as headquarters R&D. office building.
The project site is a rectangular plot, bordered to the north by the park’s first phase and to the south by the new second phase. Initially, production and R&D functions were separated, with Workshops A and B and the R&D office building located separately. By moving Workshop B, it was joined by Workshop A to form an L-shaped complex, creating a double L-shaped semi-enclosed layout. This adjustment harmonizes the flow of goods and provides more space for the R&D office building. The new layout integrates the different functional zones, transforming isolated structures into a cohesive, dynamic environment.

The GLA design layout ensures connectivity and vertical efficiency
An external corridor has been designed around the building, connecting the production plant with the R&D office building. The corridor encourages interaction between employees and researchers and fosters a sense of community. In the mornings and evenings, the corridor serves as a meeting point, and during the day, it provides a space to rest and enjoy the outdoor terrace, encouraging communication and collaboration.
The site’s bedrock is shallow, so digging a basement would be expensive and time-consuming. To accommodate more than 300 parking spaces, GLA Design’s plan calls for studio At ground level there is an elevated garage, which minimises the number of ramps by using the perimeter of the building as a semi-open car ramp, providing a comfortable experience for car travellers and efficiently managing vertical space.
By reconfiguring the layout, integrating connecting elements and adopting a strategic vertical alignment, the Chiatai Qingchunbao Production and R&D Headquarters demonstrates an innovative approach to industrial and office design while improving functionality and user experience.
