Vice President Kamala Harris speaks at the American Teachers Union’s 88th National Convention on July 25, 2024 in Houston, Texas.
Vice President Harris said Tuesday that she has not yet chosen a running mate for the 2024 presidential election.
When reporters asked her if she had chosen a candidate, the Democratic front-runner replied, “Not yet.”
Harris and her running mate are scheduled to visit battleground states next week, a source familiar with the plans confirmed to The Hill.
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) expects Harris to choose her running mate by Aug. 7. She will officially become the nominee as soon as Thursday, when Democrats proceed with their virtual roll call votes.
Harris told reporters as she departed for Georgia for a rally in Atlanta later that day.
Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona have been mentioned as possible running mates for Harris, while Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, Governor Andy Beshear (D) and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg have emerged as front-runners.
Harris is trailing former President Trump by less than 2 percentage points, according to a Decision Desk HQ/The Hill polling tally, and is doing at least somewhat better than President Biden did against Trump in several recent polls before the president left office last week.
