Brompton Bikes wanted to develop its own dedicated bike-sharing system, and because their products are foldable, this system is distinct from dock-based bike-sharing programs.
The company hired industrial design consultancy Seymour Powell to find a solution.
“A secure, modular locker for rented bikes that makes urban travel as seamless as riding a bike.”
?
“Brompton, a well-known manufacturer of lightweight, folding, portable bicycles, saw an opportunity to create a network for secure, unmanned rental of their bikes,” SeymourPowell writes. “We designed an easy-to-manufacture, highly secure docking station and the underlying UI for the system.”
“The core concept consists of an eight-module dock that can be specified with one solar panel. If demand increases, pods of four docks can be added. The solar panels make the units completely self-contained and easy to install without interfering with local services or utilities.”
???[The outcome is] Its standalone design allows for maximum flexibility and efficiency, streamlining the user experience and maximizing branding and advertising opportunities.”
Brompton Bike Hire has 70 stations across the UK where you can rent a bike for £5 (US$6.43) a day.
