According to a scientific statement published in the American Heart Association’s journal Circulation, “Mental Health, Well-Being, and the Mind-Heart-Body Connection,” mental health can have both positive and negative effects on physical health and risk factors for heart disease and stroke.
Stress can lead to unhealthy behaviors that increase your risk of heart disease and stroke, including:

- overeating
- Lack of exercise
- Unhealthy eating habits
- Overweight
- Not taking prescribed medication
