Linda Cho of “The Great Gatsby,” a musical produced by Shin Chun-soo of OD Company, won the award for best costume design in a musical at a ceremony held Monday at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in New York City.
Cho’s costumes portray the glamorous, old and new wealthy classes of 1920s New York City. The Korean-American Cho reportedly designed around 350 costumes for the show, including 10 dresses for heroine Eva Noblezada.
“From head to toe, there are amazing craftsmen,” Cho said after receiving the award. “There are literally so many people. […] Hundreds of people work to make the costumes you see onstage every night.”
This is Cho’s second Tony Award win, having won the award in 2014 for her performance in “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder,” and she was nominated for a Tony Award in 2017 for her costume design for the musical “Anastasia.”
She holds a Masters in Design from the Yale School of Drama and a Bachelor’s in Psychology from McGill University.
Hana S. Kim, a Korean-American set designer and visual artist, won Best Lighting Design for her work with Brian McDevitt in The Outsiders, a Musical, her first Tony Award win.
Kim holds a BA in Visual Communication from Seoul National University and an MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles. Her theatre design work has been featured in venues such as Lincoln Center Theater, New York’s Public Theater, Manhattan Theatre Club, San Francisco Symphony, and Los Angeles Opera.
“The Outsiders” also won a Tony Award for Best Musical.
“Stereophonic” won the award for best play.
